Special Message Regarding High School Band Programs

Dear BSD7 Band Families:

I’m writing to you with an update regarding the structure of our high school band programs.  After navigating the transition to two high schools during the course of a year that also included a lot of challenges related to the pandemic, and after careful consideration and discussion amongst staff members and administrators, it has been decided that BHS and GHS will each have their own all-voluntary competitive marching band.

These extra-curricular bands will have seven-eight days of band camp in August, two 2-hour long after-school rehearsals each week during the season, play at home football games, and potentially travel to one tournament.  The marching band season typically ends around the beginning of November.

Although a marching band unit will remain as a part of the concert band curriculum, it will only cover basic marching tecniques and learning to play the show music and bleacher tunes.  The majority focus of class rehearsal time during the school day will be on concert band literature.  All extra-curricular requirements for marching band will be unique to those students who have opted to join one of the all-voluntary bands.

These changes will allow students who are interested only in concert band performances and those students who are also interested in competitive marching band the option to choose the experience that is most appropriate to their interests.

Please feel to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!
